Overview
This book design and typesetting project for an elocution school explores the phraseology of Victorian writers in contrast with modern usage, balancing historical authenticity with contemporary readability. As part of the process, three typographic directions were explored, each capturing a different facet of the period’s print tradition. One edition embraced the opulence of High Victorian design, layering intricate ornamentation with dense typographic textures; a second drew inspiration from the provincial press, incorporating a deliberately uneven baseline and rough-hewn character to echo the irregularities of letterpress techniques. The consented approach pursued classical refinement, using Didone letterforms and a carefully modulated typographic hierarchy to reflect the school’s emphasis on precision.
